The Quilotoa Lagoon

The Quilotoa Lagoon is one of the 15 lagoons of volcanic origin appreciated as the most beautiful in the world. The Quilotoa is the westernmost volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes, within its crater a caldera with a diameter of almost 9 km has been formed. This is the product of the collapse of the volcano, which occurred about 800 years ago. According to studies, the volcanic flow managed to reach the Pacific Ocean.

The Quilotoa lagoon is located in the province of Cotopaxi, canton Pujili.

It is a lagoon with very calm waters. The minerals have given the surface a greenish and bluish tone when it receives the impact of sunlight, inside, there are springs that from the shore, can be perceived as bubbling trails that rise to the surface.

Tourists or visitors can do ecotourism and adventure tourism with a high dose of adrenaline or simply contemplate the nearby landscapes.

The lagoon is close to what many researchers assume as the last resting place of the Inca Atahualpa, so this was the last sacred route of the Incas. Visiting Quilotoa is an overwhelming experience at approximately 4 thousand meters above sea level.

The temperature varies between 3 and 15 degrees Celsius

The lagoon is also known as the "Summit" Route.

The natives, crafts, flora, fauna, buildings, climate, gastronomy and geography make this Andean tourist attraction one of the most desired by national and international tourism. The journey to Quilotoa is also part of the tourist attraction, as it zigzags through the Andes and enters the Andean páramo.

Its building forms a symmetrical cone with slopes of up to 35 ° and a basal diameter of 20 km, the Cotopaxi is surrounded by moors that border 3000 meters above sea level and by other volcanoes such as Sincholahua (4873 msnm), Quilindaña (4876 msnm) and Rumiñahui ( 4722 msnm).

The Cotopaxi volcano is located in the Latacunga canton of Cotopaxi province, with an elevation of 5897 msnm, it is the second highest volcano in the country.

His name Cotopaxi means Neck of the Moon.

There are several attractions or natural resources that can be observed such as the Quishuar Trail: On the route that allows you to enjoy several tourist attractions in the area, especially crossing the pine forest.

The Cotopaxi volcano has an exotic dry microclimate that allows its ascent during most of the year. Starting from 4800 meters and in an approximate time of 6 to 8 hours, you will be able to reach the foot of the impressive crater half a kilometer wide and marvel at the spectacular view of the tops of most of the volcanoes in Ecuador.

In its eastern slopes there is a refuge, where tourists can enjoy the landscape of the valley and the Limpiopungo lagoon, including wild ducks in their panorama. A permit granted by the Cotopaxi National Park authorities is required for them to ascend.

I recommend the ascent to the Cotopaxi volcano, since it is a wonderful experience, the ascent is something for very brave people who want to reach the top, but for the ascent you need to acquire a permit from the authorities and go with a guide specialized, since it is very risky and dangerous and you could get lost.
But going up is something unique and wonderful. so for all the people who like adventure tourism here they have a unique experience
